Pfungstadt, Germany, June, 1947: Several generations of a German family share a meal in their small quarters. The 10-member family stretched beyond the dinner table, eating from whatever cups, mugs and pans they had while surrounded by multiple beds and storage trunks. Western Germany's severe postwar housing shortage was exacerbated by the number of people from the Soviet sector seeking refuge, and the cold winter of 1946-1947 with its shortage of heating fuel made things even worse.
