Soap box derby in Germany, 1948

Ulm, Germany, July, 1948: While many of their counterparts on the other side of the Iron Curtain spent the postwar years carrying pictures of Stalin through the streets of East Berlin, hundreds of West German kids were enthusiastically taking part in an iconic American activity, the soap box derby. Here, all eyes are on one particularly intense-looking competitor at the starting line of a derby in Ulm that drew 225 entries and a crowd of 30,000 spectators along the Romerstrasse.
