Two months earlier, while performing in Paris with the famed Kirov Ballet of Leningrad, the Russian star had defected to the West. He was still mulling his future, saying his options included "maybe Europe, London or Paris, or maybe America. I shall make a tour and look over every place. I shall decide on a place where there is good ballet and good audiences."
