Berlin, December, 1961: Forlorn and incongruous amid the barricades, barbed wire and tank traps of the four-month-old Berlin Wall near Potzdammmer Platz stands a Christmas tree, a symbol of peace and goodwill on earth. (To the Communists in the city's Eastern sector, it was known as a New Year's tree.)
