Jim Arwine ©Stars and StripesBerlin, August, 1978: U.S. soldiers on patrol along the Berlin Wall peer across the East-West divide at their Communist counterparts from an observation tower. "We'd like to holler at them when they sleep, but don't," one American first lieutenant said. "Anyway, it gives us a good insight into the discipline of their soldiers." The recon patrol gathered information and filed reports on activities along the wall with the Emergency Operations Center, Berlin Brigade Headquarters. They were looking for any physical changes or activities associated with the wall, as well as vehicle movement, people activities and construction projects.
