DALLAS (Tribune News Service) — An Uber driver was wounded when a gunman opened fire on a car early Tuesday on the edge of Old East Dallas, southeast of Lakewood Country Club.

Officers arrived about 1 a.m. in the 100 block of South Brookside Drive, near Abrams Road, and found the Uber driver's vehicle with 10 to 15 bullet holes in its right front passenger door and window.

The gunman, identified as 33-year-old John Beaty, told police he'd seen someone he thought was committing a crime in the Uber vehicle before he started firing. Investigators were looking into whether the gunman is a former soldier who may be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Beaty served in the Army from 2007 to 2010, according to government records.

The shooting may have been the result of a misunderstanding, WFAA-TV (Channel 8) reported.

The 24-year-old driver was discussing guns with a passenger who was being dropped off at the Lakewood on the Trail Apartments, and the two were were passing the passenger's gun back and forth, WFAA said.

Beaty, who was nearby, reportedly saw this and opened fire because he suspected a crime was being committed.

The Uber driver, whose name was not released, was shot once in the chest and was taken to Baylor University Medical Center, police said. The gunman reportedly was providing the victim first aid when police arrived. The injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. The passenger, who was not hurt, was not identified.

Beaty was jailed on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
