Taszar Air Base, Hungary, January, 1996: U.S. service members on their way to Bosnia are kept warm in their tent by gas heaters, following some uncomfortable conditions in the early stages of the mission. According to a Stars and Stripes story, “the tent city was nowhere near completion when thousands of troops descended upon the base in mid-December as the Army made a dash for the border of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Troops arrived to an incomplete staging area that often provided no place to sleep, little heat and terrible living conditions.” By the time the photo was taken, improvements besides heat included a dining facility with television, hot showers and “deluxe toilet stations.” The gas heaters did have to be carefully monitored because of the noxious fumes they could produce.
