Frankfurt, Germany, Nov. 20, 1980: Derek Dixon, 9 (left) and J.T. Williams III pose on the playground at Frankfurt Elementary School. J.T., son of Spec. 4 William and Karen Carroll saved Derek's life by performing the Heimlich maneuver when he saw his friend choking at lunch. J.T., who is also 9-years-old, had seen how to perform the life-saving maneuver when their teacher Ms. Kathryn Willers' showed a movie on it to her fourth grade class at Frankfurt Elementery School No. 2. Derek is the son of Spec. 5 Anthony and Myrna Dixon.

Tachikawa Air Base, Japan, Oct. 22, 1960: Standard of Athens leads Junior Olympic paraders at Tachi West Track Saturday. Behind These Athletes Are Competitors From Argos, Corinth, Thebes, Sparta, Other Ancient Cities.
Seven sixth grade classes from the Tachikawa Air Base, Japan, Dependent Elementary School got together at the Tachikawa West Track Saturday for their own version of the athletic classic. Boys and girls on the teams ran the gamut of competitive skills in the big global event, including shot-putting, broad jumping and relay races.
The 1960 Junior Olympics began when student Tom Mulky, acting as the Olympic flame runner, touched his torch to the fire pot that burned throughout the competition. The teams were named after the seven cities of ancient Greece – Corinth, Olympia, Argos, Thebes, Sparta, Marathon and Athens.

Pictured here is a scan of the original 1960 print created by Stars and Stripes Pacific's photo department to run in the print newspaper. The red marks indicate the crop lines. Only the middle part of the image would appear in the newspaper. As the vast majority of pre-1964 Stars and Stripes Pacific negatives and slides were unwittingly destroyed by poor temporary storage in 1963, the prints developed from the late 1940s through 1963 are often the only images left of Stripes' news photography from those decades. Stars and Stripes' archives team is scanning these prints to ensure their preservation.

Eric Melloh, 30, of Huntsville, Texas, during the search of the home of a man suspected of helping insurgents direct mortar fire at Forward Operating Base Murray in Iraq’s Arab Jabour district southeast of Baghdad. Both men are from Company A, 1-30th Infantry, 3rd Infantry Division based at FOB Murray.

Somewhere in the Saudi Arabian desert, 1991: An American servicemember in the Saudi Arabian desert in 1991 tends a burning trash pit.

Millions of veterans exposed to hazardous substances during military service — from burn pits and sulfur fires to asbestos and firefighting foams — became eligible March 5, 2024 for free or low-cost care at Department of Veterans Affairs health facilities. Enrollment in VA health care is open to qualifying veterans from the Vietnam War, Gulf War, conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, the global war on terrorism, or any other combat zone after 9/11.

The 17-year-old lives with 11 girls and 15 boys in Pomeroy Hall while attending nearby American High School on the Seoul Area South Command Post, as there are no high schools for them to attend where their families live.
The 27 students – all dependents of U.S. Army officers and civilian personnel in Busan, Deagu, and Uijongbu - eat all their meals during the week in the high school cafeteria, but go home on the weekends when the “billets” are closed.
