Carnival — or "Masopust," as it is called in Prague — hosts festivities ranging from a fancy costume ball and special gallery exhibits to wild street fairs and parades throughout the Czech capital’s districts and surrounding villages.
Having spent the last two years stationed in Germany and enjoying the local food, wine and beer, we decided to venture out and spend a week touring the western portion of the Czech Republic called Bohemia.
Sankt Goar, a sleepy little town nestled at the base of Burg Rheinfels, once noted as the largest fortress along the Rhine, is roughly 45 miles from Wiesbaden and an easy 50-minute drive on the B9 highway — just enough time for a game of “I spy a castle.”
Across from an office park in a convenient Virginia roadside pull-off sits a pair of bins adorned with the Military Family Support Center’s logo, allowing locals to drop off clothes, housewares and other valuables. But none of the donations go to charity.
