AGANA HEIGHTS, Guam – Juan King Jr. continues putting up big games for Guam High football.

The senior running back rushed for 230 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries and caught two TD passes and the Panthers broke open what had been a close game early in a 50-7 whipping of Okkodo on Friday at Panthers Field.

Defense and special teams helped set up most of the Panthers’ scoring. Of the Panthers’ seven second-half possessions, only two began in Guam territory, thanks to interceptions and fumble recoveries in Okkodo’s end of the field.

“The defense did a great job,” coach Jacob Dowdell said, noting in particular linebacker T.J. Aguon, who had four sacks and a fumble recovery, and cornerback D.J. Williams, who forced two fumbles and recovered one.

“T.J. kept the ball on the other side of the field,” Dowdell said. “D.J. did a great job of stripping the football.”

The victory came a week after King ran for two scores and blocked an extra-point kick as the Panthers held off John F. Kennedy 20-19.

Dowdell was ejected from that game due to some of the Panthers not wearing proper knee padding. As a result, Dowdell had to sit out Friday’s game, too, but watched the game via a live stream on the team’s Facebook page.

Solomon White threw the two scoring passes to King. Jean Pierre Odasz rushed 20 yards for a touchdown and Avery Fernandez added running touchdowns of 10 and 30 yards.

It could have been worse for the Bulldogs (2-3), who broke the shutout with a kick-return touchdown with 2:33 left.

White ran into the end zone on a broken play and Fernandez took a punt return to the end zone, each in the first quarter, but both plays were called back on penalties.

With the win, the Panthers (4-1) edged to within a half-game of second-place Father Duenas (4-0) and league-leading George Washington (5-0), a 19-7 winner over JFK. The Panthers host the Geckos next Friday; kickoff is at 7 p.m.

“It should be a good game,” Dowdell said. “I’m looking forward to it.”
