SCHWEINFURT, Germany – The Vilseck Falcons boys and girls basketball teams each picked up a win Friday night in Schweinfurt.

The boys took care of business beating the Schweinfurt Razorbacks, 54-47. The girls won, 45-26.

The boys remained in a three-way tie a top the Region III standings with Heidelberg and Patch, while the girls kept pace with the top teams in their region.

The boys’ game featured quick transitions with some intense physical battles. The teams totaled 38 fouls between them. The game remained close up to half-time with Vilseck on top, 25-21. But the Falcons pulled away in the third quarter outscoring the Razorbacks, 18-7.

Daniel Arroyo collected 10 of his game-high 12 points in the second half.

“Third quarter, everything was just clicking – we capitalized on their turnovers,” Arroyo said.

Schweinfurt battled back in the fourth quarter - outscoring Vilseck by eight points - but the Falcons were able to hold off the late surge with a strong defensive performance, according to John Sabala the Falcons head coach.

In the girls action, sophomore China Sumpter and seniors Sharmil Whyatt and  Deraj McClinton combined for all but six of their teams’ 45 points. Sumpter appeared not to be able to miss a shot in her second half shooting surge that led her to a game-high 18 points.

“In the first half I needed to get warmed up,” she said. “I felt good – I felt like I was leading my team somewhere.”

The teams will meet again Saturday at the Finney Fitness Center on Conn Barracks in Schweinfurt, Germany.
