Upperclassmen and Division I players dominate the 2013-14 All-Europe basketball teams, announced this week by DODDS-Europe athletic director Karen Seadore. Seniors account for 15 of the combined 20 spots on the boys and girls first teams, and 26 of the 40 spots overall. Similarly, 15 of the first-team selections and 24 selections overall come from six Division I programs. Wiesbaden, which won the Division I girls title and took a narrow loss to Patch in the boys European championship game, is the best-represented school on the All-Europe teams. The Warriors earned seven All-Europe nods, including four first-team selections. Cierra Martin and Catherine Klein made the first team for the girls, while Kelsey Thomas and CJ Pridgen cracked the boys’ first team. Interestingly, three of the four Wiesbaden selections are underclassmen; only Thomas is a senior. Patch and Kaiserslautern earned four selections apiece, including three first-team nods each. Lakenheath collected two first-team selections and three overall. Four Division II stars – SHAPE’s Mitja Zupanc and Vicenza’s Derrick Schaefer for the boys and Ansbach’s Alyssa Solis and Black Forest Academy’s Emily Campbell for the girls – made the first team. Brussels post Ana-Marija Vasileva was the only Division III athlete among the 20 first-team selections. The combined program of Schweinfurt/Bamberg earned two final All-Europe selections before both schools close at year’s end. Leon Roy made the second team for the boys, and Damonique Lamons did the same on the girls side.
