When the 2012 European high school softball championships open Thursday at Ramstein High School and Kapaun Air Station on the hill above Kaiserslautern High School, Kaiserslautern will be chasing a bit of school history, Naples will begin its quest for a fourth straight Division II title, and at least one of the five D-III teams, who enter this event with a combined 3-36 record, will emerge from the three-day event a winner.
The defending Division I, II and III boys’ high school soccer champions are in peril of one-and-done seasons in the throne-room, based on seeds for the three events released Wednesday.
Andrew Junior, Devon Fluker and Andre Walker each scored goals Saturday to erase a 2-0 deficit after the game’s first 15 minutes and propel the Hohenfels Tigers to a 3-2 Region III victory over the prevuiously unbeaten Vilseck Falcons.
Two-time Stars and Stripes players of the year Janelle Loney and Tre’von Owens headline the All-Europe boys’ and girls’ basketball teams selected in late March by panels of coaches chaired by DODDS-Europe athletic coordinator Karen Seadore.
The story lines for the 14th DODDS-Europe high school softball season, which begins Saturday with doubleheaders at Baumholder, SHAPE and Ramstein, are pretty straightforward.
If you find change unsettling, you might want to skip the boys’ 2012 high-school soccer season which kicks off Saturday at nine venues across Europe. Continuity’s going to be in short supply.
Any team wishing to mount a challenge to the three defending European girls’ soccer champions would be well-advised to bring their A-games, beginning with Saturday’s season-openers.
