Steady rainfall across northern Italy has scuttled all but a handful of this weekend’s scheduled DODDS-Europe baseball and softball games at Aviano and Vicenza.

The only surviving games of the anticipated Germany-Italy divisional showdowns will be held Saturday at Aviano. Identical schedules will be played concurrently on the outpost’s baseball and softball fields: Sigonellla will face Ansbach and Hohenfels consecutively, then Aviano will take on Hohenfels and Ansbach.

Friday’s Division II/III games at Aviano have been cancelled, as has the full two-day schedule of Division I games set for Vicenza. That large-school action was to include the first meetings between existing Division I schools Patch and Vilseck and new Division I entries Naples and Vicenza since last fall’s divisional realignment.

The multi-team meets in Italy were the centerpiece of DODDS-Europe pre-spring break schedule, featuring unusual regular-season meetings between German and Italian schools that rarely meet outside of the postseason.

The DODDS-Europe season resumes Friday, April 17. That weekend’s schedule includes Aviano, Sigonella and Vicenza making their annual trip to Naples for a two-day event, while Ansbach, Hohenfels, Patch and Vilseck also face regional opponents.
