Menwith Hill too much for British squad

RAF MENWITH HILL, England – Senor quarterback Schuyler Backlar passed for one touchdown and ran for another, and Alex Abing broke two long TD runs Saturday to propel the Menwith Hill Mustangs to a 43-14 non-conference victory over the Woodham Warriors of the English league.
“They loved getting a chance to play nine-man football,” Menwith Hill coach Pete Resnick said of his guests. “They usually only get to play four- or five man ball. They also loved the cheerleaders, the atmosphere and having a full crew of officials who knew the rules.”
Backlar passed 35 yards to Damon Morris for one TD and ran two yards for his second to lift the Mustangs to a 29-14 halftime lead. Morris had scored Menwith Hill’s first TD on a five-yard run, but the big play of the half came when Abling broke loose for an 85-yard TD on a sweep.
Abing broke a 40-yard scoring run after intermission, and Adrian Knight tacked on Menwith’s final TD on a 25-yard scamper.
Next up for Menwith Hill (2-0 overall 1-0 in D-III) is a Friday night showdown at Rota. Woodham is scheduled to visit Alconbury on Saturday for another taste of the American high school football experience.
Billy Hobson ran 40 yards for one of Woodham’s TDs; Chris Armstrong threw a 36-yard TD pass to jack Curry for the other. Both plays came in the first half.
