Hohenfels wins shootout with AFNORTH
HOHENFELS, Germany - Sophomore David Vidovic ran for five touchdowns Friday night to lift the Hohenfels Tigers to a 44-42 victory over the visiting AFNORTH Lions.
Vidovic, a transfer from Vilseck, scored on runs of 12, 70, 52, five and 43 yards en route to amassing 343 yards on 32 carries. He also ran for a pair of two-point conversions, the second of which provided the margin of victory in this non-conference game between Division II schools. The game-winning conversion followed Vidovic’s game-tying 43-yard TD run with 1:57 to play.
Vidovic’s best game yet allowed the Tigers to dodge the second consecutive 400-plus-yard passing game by AFNORTH’s Daniel Cordova. Cordova, who passed for 493 yards the previous Saturday, passed for three touchdowns and ran for two more, completing two 25-yard scoring strikes to Victor Black and one of 18 yards to Denster Carnes. For the day Cordova was 21-of-36 for 417 yards. Black caught eight balls for 182 total yards; Carnes grabbed five for 78 yards.
Exploiting all the possibilities of the AFNORTH spread formation, Cordova ran the ball in from 10 and 31 yards out. His 31-yarder came with just 4:33 to go and put the Lions on top 40-36, but the Tigers stopped AFNORTH’s two-point run try.
In a game without Vidovic and Cordova on the field., AFNORTH’s Kaylan Joseph would have been the story. He rushed for 241 yards and scored on runs of 26 and 13 yards.
All told, the teams combined for more than 1,000 yards of total offense, according to Hohenfels coach Ed Lynch, 600-plus yards on the ground and 400 or so through the air.
Even so, there were defensive standouts, according to Lynch. AFNORTH’s Aldon Pagio was credited with being in on 18 tackles; his teammates Isaiah Grabowski and Luke Narung each posted a sack.
Hohenfels freshman Kordell Kraft scored the other Tigers’ TD, on a one-yard run, with 7:09 to play, to put the Tigers up 38-34.
Next up for AFNORTH (1-2) is a II-North game Friday at International School of Brussels. Hohenfels (1-2) is to travel to Vicenza for a II-South game on Saturday.
