Division I programs SHAPE and Wiesbaden got a head start on their competition this weekend, completing Friday-Saturday boys and girls basketball sweeps while the rest of DODDS-Europe remained idle for the winter break.

BoysSHAPE 47/54, Brussels 10/16: The Spartans claimed both halves of a home-and-home series by substantial margins.

On Friday, homestanding SHAPE held the Brigands to three or fewer points in each quarter to put away the Division III Brigands. Austin Stephens scored 18 points and Matthew Hoover added seven points and six steals in the win.

On Saturday, Stephens again paced all scorers with 15 points, while backcourt mate Cameron Little added 12 points and seven steals. The visiting Spartans put the game away early, building a 12-point lead through one quarter and a 28-point halftime edge.

Wiesbaden 64, Ansbach 35: Saturday at Wiesbaden, the Warriors evened their season record with a second straight rout of the visiting Cougars. Wiesbaden won Friday's opener 76-37.

Isiah Washington and John McKoy scored 12 points apiece to lead the Warriors. McKoy added seven rebounds and four assists.

Ansbach's Lamar Finlay led all scorers with 13 points while adding a team-high six rebounds.

The win gives Wiesbaden its first doubleheader sweep of the season and improves its overall record to 3-3 on the year. The Warriors are back in action Tuesday against divisional rival Kaiserslautern.

GirlsSHAPE 35/26, Brussels 6/22: Begona Rodriguez provided the firepower as the Spartans completed a Friday-Saturday sweep of the Brigands.

Rodriguez exploded for 28 points - twice as many as her teammates and opponents produced combined - in Friday's home-court Spartans rout. Teammate Marianna Kyriou filled out the rest of the stat sheet with seven rebounds, three steals and four blocked shots.

Saturday's rematch at Brussels was much closer, though the result was the same. Rodriguez scored 10 points, the only player on either team to crack double figures, as the Spartans survived a fourth-quarter comeback attempt from the home team. Gloria Hernandez scored eight to pace the Brigands.

Wiesbaden 26, Ansbach 23: Saturday at Wiesbaden, the host Warriors outscored the Cougars 15-7 in the fourth quarter to earn a comeback victory and complete a weekend sweep.

Rosette Gray turned in her second double-double of the weekend in the win, posting game-high totals of 12 points and 12 rebounds. Corban Jackson chipped in nine points in the win.

Tytianna Martinez scored nine points to lead the Division III Cougars, who presented a far tougher challenge Saturday than in Friday's 42-20 setback.

Wiesbaden has now won three straight games after starting its season with three straight losses.
