Iraq veteran's opera puts inner turmoil on stage
A former Marine who has attempted suicide four times since returning from serving his country in Iraq has found a unique way to soothe his soul, according to an article by The Associated Press.
Christian Ellis, 29, is featured in “Fallujah,” a two-hour opera developed in Canada by City Opera Vancouver.
Ellis was trained as a classical singer before joining the military, according to the AP report. The opera features many scenes from Ellis’ time in Iraq.
“When I sing, it’s like this identity that I’ve been looking for comes out and takes over,” he said in the article. “I honestly forget my fears. I forget my guilt, my regrets, the pain, the betrayal, the struggles.”
