West Berlin, August 19, 1961: West Berlin Mayor Willy Brandt listens intently as Vice President Lyndon Johnson addresses the crowd that greeted him at Tempelhof Airport. Johnson was sent by President Kennedy to meet with West German leaders and reassure them of America's support in the wake of the construction of the Berlin Wall a few days earlier. While in the divided city, Johnson greeted 1,500 troops from the 18th Infantry's 1st Battle Group who drove up in a convoy from Mannheim to bolster the U.S. military presence.
