Munich, Germany, November 23, 1957: Dr. Ernst "Putzi" Hanfstaengl gestures during an interview with Stars and Stripes at his home. Hanfstaengl, a Harvard-educated member of the Sedgwick family of New England, was an accomplished pianist who played for Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt, as well as Winston Churchill. However, another of his listeners was Adolf Hitler, a friend and frequent guest at the Hanfstaengl home in Germany. Hanfstaengl became a member of the fuehrer's inner circle and served as the Nazis' foreign press chief before running afoul of elements of the leadership and fleeing Germany in 1937. During the war, he reported to FDR on the workings of Hitler's regime.
