Saigon, South Vietnam, November 13, 1969: Former Alabama Gov. George Wallace discusses the issues during a breakfast interview at a Saigon hotel. A year earlier, Wallace — a segregationist who once blocked a doorway in an attempt to keep two black students out of the University of Alabama — had collected almost 10 million votes as the American Independent Party candidate in the presidential election. He ran again in 1972, but his campaign was ended by a shooting that left him confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
