Near Darmstadt, Germany, July 18, 1953: A dangerous section of the autobahn between Darmstadt and Rhein-Main Air Base that was known as the "death strip" claimed another victim when this Volkswagen collided with a motorcycle driven by a 48-year-old Rhein-Main worker. The cyclist was killed; the driver of the overturned VW suffered only minor injuries. The previous month, six people had died on this stretch of highway.
