Blockaded Berliners

West Berlin, July 21, 1948: During the Soviet blockade of West Berlin, electricity was a luxury that residents could only count on for about four hours a day. That left candles as the light source for everything from preparing a meal to reading the newspaper. The hours during which power was flowing in the city became the guide for setting daily schedules, even if it meant movies or hairdresser's appointments at midnight.
