Stuttgart, Germany, July 19, 1953: Labor leader Walter Reuther, president of the CIO and the United Auto Workers, makes a point as he talks to a reporter during a visit with relatives in the Stuttgart area. Reuther negotiated the 1955 merger of the CIO with the AFL, and in the early 1960s was an active civil rights advocate who spoke at Dr. Martin Luther King's March on Washington. He died in a plane crash in 1970.
