Tokyo, November 8, 1978: Jockey Mary Bacon puts a horse through its paces during an early-morning workout at the Oi Racetrack in Tokyo. Bacon was the first female jockey to ride to 100 wins and to become an apprentice jockey, but she often seemed to be surrounded by controversy. She posed semi-nude for Playboy magazine, and saw her endorsement and movie opportunities dwindle after she made racist comments at a rally. Her weeklong Tokyo appearance, however, brought large crowds to the struggling Oi track. "I came here for more than just money," she told the AP. "I felt I could add to racing here."
