Saigon, Vietnam, April, 1969: Stars and Stripes photographer Paul D. Savanuck at the paper's Saigon bureau, a few days before his death. Savanuck, a military journalist, was covering C Troop of the 3rd Squadron, 5th Armored Cavalry Regiment when they came under attack on April 18, 1969 near Cam Lo, in Quang Tri Province. During the battle, he put down his camera to assist a wounded soldier, and was killed by enemy gunfire. This afternoon at Fort Meade in his home state of Maryland, Paul Savanuck will be remembered with the dedication in his honor of the library at the Defense Information School. Already named after him are an annual military journalism award, as well as Post 888 of the Jewish War Veterans.
