Tokyo, May 12, 1972: From the "what might have been" department: Vice President Spiro T. Agnew passes the presidential seal as he deplanes at Haneda Airport. Agnew might have become president upon Richard Nixon's resignation in 1974, but by then he was long gone from the political scene after resigning amid charges of tax evasion and a nolo contendere plea. Here, he was serving as Nixon's personal representative (and flying in a presidential aircraft) to ceremonies marking the reversion of Okinawa from the U.S. to Japan.
