Wiesbaden, Germany, January 4, 1958: Jazz great Lionel Hampton leads his band — consisting mainly of former servicemembers — across the floor in a spirited rendition of "When the Saints Go Marching In." The vibraphone virtuoso told a Stripes reporter that "the Army camps and the air bases are crawling with musical talent ... No matter where we play some cat comes over with his horn and says, 'Hamp, can I sit in?' and I tell him to go grab himself a chair."
