Tokyo, September 19, 1992: Ukrainian pole vaulter Sergei Bubka launches himself toward the bar during the Toto International track and field meet at Tokyo's National Stadium. Bubka, the 1988 Olympic gold medalist coming off a disappointing no-height failure at the 1992 games in Barcelona, soared 20 feet, 1½ inches in this meet to get back on the right track and set a world record for the 32nd time in his career. His indoor and outdoor marks in the event still stand after more than a decade.
