May Day 1948 in Berlin
©Stars and Stripes

Berlin, May 1, 1948: Police from the Soviet sector of Berlin carry red flags as they march past bombed-out ruins — and street signs in German and Russian — on their way to the Communist May Day rally at the Lustgarten. While a crowd of 200,000 gathered beneath the requisite huge posters of Communist heroes, an anti-Communist rally a half-mile away at the Reichstag drew 120,000. The Reds offered free beer and sausage — no small favor in postwar Germany — to their participants; a speaker at the rival gathering noted in response that "here we offer freedom."
