Frankfurt, Germany, July 24, 1949: Author Thomas Mann (right) engages in a lively discussion at a gathering in Frankfurt, where he was to deliver a lecture on Goethe and accept a literary prize. Mann, an ardent anti-fascist and winner of the 1929 Nobel Prize for literature (in great part for his novel, Buddenbrooks), was one of the many talented Germans driven out of the country with the rise of the Nazis. His 1948 novel, Doctor Faustus, was a commentary on the path taken by Germany under Hitler. Mann, whose other works include Death in Venice, became a U.S. citizen and taught at Princeton, but during the McCarthy era of anti-communism he moved to Switzerland, where he died in 1955.
