YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE, Japan — ShallTown, a bar in the “Honch” nightlife district outside Yokosuka Naval Base, was declared “off limits” to military personnel this week.
A base spokesman declined to give specific reasons for the restriction but said base commanding officer Capt. Greg Cornish and the base’s Armed Forces Disciplinary Control Board decided the bar wasn’t meeting the standard for the “safety and welfare” of its military patrons.
The AFDCB monitors off-base establishments and works with the security department, said base spokesman Bill Doughty.
“Capt. Cornish is taking this step to maintain the safety, welfare, good order and discipline of military personnel,” Doughty said. “The board works closely with local law enforcement and we’ve seen a pattern of problems and issues.”
ShallTown is the only Yokosuka bar that is off-limits for military personnel.
Cornish will make an announcement on Thursday’s “Commander’s Corner” call-in television program, Doughty said.
