'Warthogs' get a splashy farewell at Spangdahlem Air Base

SPANGDAHLEM, Germany — A trio of A-10 “Warthogs” from the 81st Fighter Squadron, piloted by Lt. Col. Jeff Hogan and Capts. Josh Geidel and Greg Ulrich, received a ceremonial hose down Tuesday after completing the squadron’s final tactical training mission from Spangdahlem Air Base.
The A-10s, which have been stationed at Spangdahlem since 1994, are scheduled to leave the base at the end of the week.
The 81st Fighter Squadron saw action in Europe during World War II and has been on the Continent continually since 1953. It is scheduled to inactivate next month.
Over the years the squadron flew a number of aircraft including the F-86 Sabre, F-100 Super Sabre, F-4 Phantom and F16 Fighting Falcon.
