Vicenza-based soldier dies of wounds sustained in Afghanistan

AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy – A member of the Vicenza-based 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment died Thursday in Afghanistan, according to a release issued Saturday by the Department of Defense.

Sgt. Kyle B. Osborn, 26, from Lafayette, Ind., died of wounds sustained when his unit was attacked by small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades, according to the release.

Osborn was on the football and wrestling teams at McCutcheon High School, according to an article posted on Indystar.com. As a senior, he was an individual state qualifier and captain of the 2005 regional championship wrestling team, the article said.

Osborn is the ninth member of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team to be killed in Afghanistan since the Sky Soldiers deployed in June and July. That equals the total number of brigade soldiers who were killed in a year-long deployment in 2009-2010.

Six of those killed during the current deployment have been assigned to 1-503.

A memorial service at Caserma Ederle is pending.
