Lawsuit: VA misusing L.A. land meant for homeless vets
A lawsuit filed June 8 accuses the federal government of misusing a 390-acre plot of land in Los Angeles that was donated for facilities to house veterans who need care after traumatic military experiences, The Associated Press reported Thursday.
The suit, filed by the American Civil Liberties Union, says the Department of Veterans Affairs has leased the land to private entities, including a car rental company for vehicle storage, a hotel for laundry facilities, and an energy company for an oil well, the story said.
That usage is counter to the intent of the landowners who deeded the property to the government in 1888, their descendants told AP.
"The VA could quite literally end veteran homelessness in Los Angeles if this land were used as it was intended," ACLU lawyer Mark Rosenberg said at a news conference announcing the lawsuit.
