Help keep the Kerrville Veterans Center open
Kerrville Daily Times, Texas
Since opening this summer, the Hill Country Veterans Center in the former National Guard armory building on Meadowview Lane has helped more than 2,000 local veterans.
The facility is operated by a board of four local veterans and kept open by the work of mostly volunteers. The facility has provided meeting space for local veteran organizations and provides offices for local volunteer veteran service officers.
For many veterans — those returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and those who served years ago — the Veterans Center is one of the few places to go when they need help. It’s also been a place where the families and surviving spouses of veterans can go to get assistance.
Veterans make up about 13 percent of our local population, double the national average, and give back to our community in lots of ways, but keeping the Veterans Center open is going to take more than just the efforts of a handful of dedicated volunteers. Like any organization, it takes money to keep the doors open and the lights on.
So far, the Veterans Center has been fortunate to receive grant funding for renovations, and local business owners have donated both money and supplies. Those have helped get the facility up and running, but monthly bills, including interest on the $250,000 loan to buy the property, total about $1,500.
Long-term plans call for installing a sprinkler system and making restroom facilities ADA complaint so the main hall can be rented out creating revenue for the facility, but until then the center is operating solely on donations.
Comanche Trace will host a fundraiser Saturday at the clubhouse to support the Veterans Center. As of Thursday, about 150 people had confirmed they would attend the event. With a suggested donation of $20, that will keep the Veterans Center doors open for another two months, but more will be needed after that.
Fundraisers like this will help the center keep the doors open for local veterans and their families.
