A Florida National Guard captain from St. Augustine, Fla., and a tech sergeant from Starke, Fla., were killed Sunday night when they stopped to help a motorist on Interstate 10 in Jefferson County and were hit by another car, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Capt. Tecarie M. Czarnecki, whose age was unavailable, and Tech Sgt. David A. Stone, 30, were in a military convoy headed west on the interstate just after 7 p.m., according to the highway patrol. They all pulled over when one of the convoy’s vehicles, headed from Camp Blanding to Quincy, had a tire blow out, said Lt. Col. James Evans, a National Guard spokesman.
When another vehicle swerved into the grassy median to avoid debris from the tire, Czarnecki and Stone walked over to see if that driver needed help as westbound traffic began to slow since the convoy had pulled over. That’s when the driver of a Nissan Sentra hit the brakes and swerved off the road to avoid slowing traffic and hit the captain and sergeant, the highway patrol said.
Czarnecki and Stone were killed.
A man at the Czarnecki home said the family didn’t wish to comment yet.
