Illinois college plans week of activities to honor vets, military
Southwestern Illinois College is planning a week-long slate of activities designed to honor veterans and current members of the military.
Among the activities are:
-- The names of 1,750 fallen servicemen and women will be read as part of The Fight Continues. At 10 a.m. on Nov. 7, 750 names will be read at the Belleville campus and at 11 a.m. 500 names will be read at the Granite City campus. At noon on Nov. 8, 500 names will be read at the Red Bud campus.
-- A veterans job fair with more than 80 companies on hand will be held 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 8 in the Belleville Campus varsity gym. SWIC officials urge job seeking veterans to dress professionally and bring plenty of resumes.
-- A salute to veterans will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 8 at the SWIC Granite City campus.
-- Armed Forces Night: Hoops fans can watch two basketball games featuring SWIC and Mineral Area College. All military members and veterans get in free. Civilians also get free admission if they bring three nonperishable food items to donate. The games are at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 12.
Other events include an opportunity for people to send messages of gratitude to soldiers overseas, a drive to collect donated items for homeless veterans and families of patients receiving care at military and VA medical centers, and a military trivia contest.
