Happy 377th birthday, National Guard

Six of the National Guard's eight 2013 Outstanding Soldiers and Airmen of the Year kick off the National Guard's 377th birthday celebrations by cutting a cake on Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C., Dec. 11, 2013. The birthday is today, December 13.

The Guard hits the ripe old age of 377 today. How so old? According to National Guard’s history page, it's because they trace their roots back to the village green in Salem, Mass., on Dec. 13, 1636. Virginia Army National Guard UH-72 helicopter air crews based in Sandston conduct water hoist training with Chesterfield Fire & EMS Scuba Rescue Team personnel Sept. 10, 2013, at Lake Chesdin on the border of Chesterfield County and Dinwiddie County.
