Copy that: DVD bootlegger, 'Big Hy,' a big hit with troops downrange
At 92, Hyman Strachman knows how to connect with troops downrange.
"Big Hy," as he is known, estimates that since 2004 he has duplicated and shipped roughly 300,000 DVDs of Hollywood films to troops serving in war zones.
According to the New York Times, Strachman, a World War II veteran, said he took up the task of copying DVDs for troops as a way to keep busy after his wife died in 2003.
While his 60-hour-a-week volunteer work is a violation of international copyright laws, he told the Times that he suspects his age has kept him, so far, out of the "hoosegow."
Troops downrange told the Times that they knew whenever a new movie was coming out, they'd soon be getting free DVDs of the movie in the mail from 'Big Hy."
