2nd Airborne Division's 3rd Brigade welcomes new commander
The 82nd Airborne Division's 3rd Brigade will welcome a new commander today on Fort Bragg.
Col. Michael R. Fenzel, commander of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, will relinquish command to Col. Curtis A. Buzzard, officials said.
The ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. on Pike Field.
Fenzel has led the 3rd Brigade, known as the Panthers, since March 2012. He previously served as deputy brigade commander for the 82nd Airborne's 1st Brigade in 2005 and 2006.
Fenzel has deployed in support of the first Gulf War and military operations in Bosnia, Liberia, Iraq and Afghanistan.
His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star with V-device, three Bronze Stars, two Defense Meritorious Service Medals , four Meritorious Service Medals, Army Commendation Medal with V-device, five Army Commendation Medals), Master Parachutist Badge with Combat Jump Star, two Combat Infantryman's Badge, Ranger Tab, Expert Infantryman's Badge, Douglas MacArthur leadership award, Presidential Service Badge and White House Fellowship. He is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Buzzard was most recently the 82nd Airborne's division operations officer.
A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, he has previously served in the 82nd Airborne's 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment and the 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment.
Buzzard served as the Army Military Aide to the President, serving both President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama before returning to Fort Bragg to command the 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment.
Buzzard has deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.
His awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, two Bronze Star Medals, six Meritorious Service Medal, three Army Commendation Medal, Master Parachutist Badge, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Ranger Tab, Expert Infantryman's Badge, Air Assault Badge, Presidential Service Badge, and Army Staff Badge.
