Thousands run through Kadena during marathon

Spectators line part of the route of the Okinawa Marathon on Sunday, cheering and yelling words of encouragement as runners pass through Kadena Air Base. Hundreds of people lined the streets as the race ran through the base for about 2 miles.

KADENA AIR BASE, Okinawa — Some 13,000 runners weaved their way through Kadena Air Base on Sunday as part of the 20th Okinawa Marathon.

More than 200 military members, civilians, family members and private organizations offered their support for the event, according to an 18th Wing Press release. Some 20 students from Amelia Earhart Intermediate School performed for the runners by showcasing their Eisa Dance skills near the Gate 2 entrance.

In all, hundreds of cheering spectators lined the nearly 2-mile route from Gate 2 to Gate 5 on the installation.

“Good job, Keep it up, you got it,” yelled Jessi Bos, an Air Force spouse shouting encouragement to the runners at the around the 18-mile mark. I’m out here supporting everyone, she beamed.”

Runners began entering the installation at approximately 10:30 a.m. with the last runners exited Gate 5 around 1:30 p.m.
