Teen son of AF officer dies from gunshot wound in England

RAF MILDENHALL, England — The 13-year-old son of a U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel stationed in England reportedly died from a gunshot wound to the head in what officials are calling a “tragic accident.”

The active-duty military officer is assigned as part of an academic exchange program at Oxford University, according to a statement by the 501st Combat Support Wing at RAF Alconbury.

The Oxfordshire Coroner’s Office said there will be no official inquest, a fact-finding investigation held by the Coroner’s Office to determine the cause of death. The Coroner’s Office said there is no requirement for such an investigation under the provisions of the Visiting Forces Act.

Air Force officials said Wednesday that they were unsure whether any further investigation will take place into the boy’s death, which occurred Monday.
