Survivors of Frankfurt airport shooting return to RAF Lakenheath

RAF LAKENHEATH, England — The 12 uninjured survivors of a shooting aboard an Air Force bus at Frankfurt airport last week returned to their home unit at RAF Lakenheath on Monday.

The airmen were en route to Afghanistan on Wednesday when suspect Arid Uka opened fire on the bus’ passengers, killing Senior Airman Nicholas Alden, 25, of Williamston, S.C., and Airman 1st Class Zachary Cuddeback, 21, of Stanardsville, Va.

Alden was with Lakenheath’s 48th Security Forces Squadron, while Cuddeback, the bus driver, was assigned to the 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron at Germany’s Ramstein Air Base.

Staff Sgt. Kristoffer Schneider, 25, of Irwin, Pa., and another unidentified airman were wounded in the shooting.

German prosecutors said last week that Uka had confessed to the shooting and was a radicalized Muslim.

The 12 Lakenheath airmen flew back via military air, Lakenheath spokesman Tech Sgt. Christopher Stagner said Monday.

A memorial for Alden is planned for Friday at Lakenheath.
