Strumming the pain, songwriters play vets' stories

Army veterans diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder teamed up with musicians during a Texas retreat to recount their war stories, have them documented through music -- and maybe find healing in the process, NPR reports.
During the weekend retreat that took place near Fort Hood, 10 soldiers — veterans of multiple deployments and suffering from some form of PTSD — were paired with professional songwriters for the newly-formed project, SongwritingWith:Soldiers, NPR reports.
NPR reports that the effort, founded by singer-songwriter Darden Smith, has drawn some major donors, including The Bob Woodruff Foundation and Lockheed Martin. There are plans to expand nationally in 2013.
