Navy, Marines, Air Force to begin joint Pacific exercise Sunday

SASEBO NAVAL BASE, Japan — The USS George Washington Carrier Strike Group and the USS Essex Amphibious Ready Group will participate in a joint military exercise on Sunday, the 7th Fleet announced Thursday.

Exercise Valiant Shield, which also will include an Air Force expeditionary wing and Marine units, will start near Palau and move east, concluding near Guam on Sept. 21, the Navy said.

Maneuvers will simulate an opposed transit. The Navy said the exercise involves locating, tracking and engaging units at sea, in the air, on land and in cyberspace.

The carrier group is forward-deployed to Yokosuka Naval Base, Japan, and the Essex group operates out of Sasebo.

It is the third Valiant Shield exercise conducted by the United States since 2006.
