CAMP RED CLOUD, South Korea — The commanding general of the 8th Army, who also serves as chief of staff for U.S. Forces Korea, will soon leave to become inspector general for the Office of the Secretary of the Army in Washington, D.C., the Pentagon announced this week.

Lt. Gen. Joseph F. Fil Jr. assumed his current duties in South Korea in February 2008. A specific date for his move to Washington and the name of his replacement have yet to be announced, officials said.

“I’m honored and humbled to be nominated to be the U.S. Army’s next inspector general,” Fil said through a spokesman. “However, if confirmed, I will miss Korea, the great alliance that defends it and the extraordinary men and women I have had the privilege to command here at 8th U.S. Army.”
