Navy pilot faces new charges in online child porn case

A U.S. Navy pilot now faces six felony charges in connection with the case of an underage Bedford County, Va., girl who was threatened into sending sexually explicit photos over the Internet, a prosecutor said Monday.

Daniel C. Harris, 30, already has been charged with one count each of enticing a minor under the age of 15 to perform a sexual act, using electronic means for procuring obscene material from minors, indecent liberties with a child under 15 and extortion, according to the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office.

New charges filed in Bedford County General District Court last week – one count each of enticing production of child pornography and online solicitation – stem from communications authorities say Harris had with an undercover Bedford County investigator posing as an underage girl, Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Wes Nance said Monday.

Last week, Harris was denied bond as he faces a preliminary trial in Bedford Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court on Jan. 7 on the initial charges. At a hearing in Bedford County Circuit Court, Nance presented evidence to support the case that Harris was communicating online with an actual 14-year-old girl in Bedford County.

Harris used a fake Facebook account to initiate contact with the girl and get her to send him a photo of her topless, Nance said.

He then threatened her into sending more photos, Nance said.

The girl approached family and authorities, and an undercover investigator with the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office took over the girl’s account, Nance said.

Harris was arrested last month for the offenses, which authorities say took place in July.

Harris’ attorney has said his client is employed by the Navy and was stationed in Virginia Beach but is not being paid during confinement.

After meeting with the Bedford County investigator, Nance said the additional charges against Harris were brought against him based on his purported interaction with the undercover officer posing as the girl.

There was another charge filed, Nance said, but it is to clarify a previous charge pending in Bedford Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

Harris’ charges are split between two courts, but prosecutors may seek to consolidate them, Nance said.
