Lt. Cmdr. Bruce McDonald (U.S. Navy)

Lt. Cmdr. Bruce McDonald, the executive officer of the U.S. Navy Band has been relieved of duty for personal misconduct, the Navy said Tuesday in a news release.

McDonald, of Rapid City, S.D., had been the Navy Band's executive officer since July.

The news release did not elaborate on the firing. But a story by the Military Times reported that an unnamed official said it was related to "inappropriate electronic communications" between McDonald and another servicemember's spouse.

McDonald began his Navy career in 1989 as a trombonist for the Naval Academy band and has directed 6th Fleet Band Naples, Italy; the Pacific Fleet Band Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; Fleet Forces Band Norfolk, Va.; and the Naval Academy band, according to his Navy biography.

He has been reassigned to the staff of Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, Washington, D.C. The Navy has not yet named a replacement.
