U.S. Navy backed up Israel in seizure of Iranian arms shipment
WASHINGTON — The U.S. military was prepared to get involved in Israel's seizure of a cargo vessel allegedly carrying arms from Iran to Palestinian militants, the State Department says.
The White House had directed the Defense Department to monitor the vessel and prepare to take "unilateral steps if necessary," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in Washington.
Israel "ultimately chose to take the lead," she said.
The fact that the White House directed the Pentagon to get involved showed "strong concern" by the US over Iran's attempts to destabilize the region with arms shipments, Psaki said.
